It’s New Year’s Eve 2018, and I am curious, what is it that you are doing to welcome in the new year? Now if you’re like me, in year’s past you might have partied a little bit, you might have stayed up and watched the ball drop, you might have just hung out with family and friends.
A lot of times part of what happens is that people look at the new year as a fresh start, something to welcome because we can start everything new. We can set new goals, change some things in our lives, and those are great.
However, I think a lot of times we kind of misstep when it comes to starting fresh because we develop these things called resolutions. We say this year I’m going to give up smoking, or lose weight, or stop eating seven donuts every morning.
So I just want to chat for minute about making 2019 the year that everything changes for you. I think that so many of us are in a place where it’s something that we so desire to be in a different place than where we are, whether it’s with our relationships or our job, or just even how we think about and approach life. So I want to share with you just really briefly the one thing that’s going to really make 2019 the year that changes it all for you.
Here’s that one thing…are you ready?
It’s your MIND, your brain, it’s how you THINK about things. It’s not what happens to you, it’s not even the goals that you set and achieve or don’t achieve. It’s all about your brain.
Let’s say you set a goal of losing weight, but in your brain you’re telling yourself all the time that I can’t lose weight, or this has never worked in the past, or I just really have a hard time losing weight. As long as those are the thoughts you have, guess what, you’re going to have a hard time. You are going to continue to have that difficulty until you change the way you think about it.
If you’re goal is to get a different job or improve what your job or what your financial outlook looks like, but in your brain you’re going oh I can’t afford anything, I can’t afford to change jobs, or that I can’t get a different job because of whatever reason, you’re going to get exactly what you’re thinking.
That’s your brain, and if we can change how we think about whatever our circumstance is we can change that circumstance. But by continuing to think about it in those manners, we just perpetuate it.
So I want to give you a concrete action step: a composition note, go get one! Some friends of mine thought through something called the 490 rule, where you write a positive affirmation about your goal seven times a day, every day for seventy days. Part of that affirmation is being thankful. Part of it is changing what it is that you perceive.
For today, go get a composition notebook, and start doing some affirmations today if you can, tomorrow for sure, because that will start changing how you think, what happens, and what you’re going to see in 2019.
